Mexican museum highlights war violence
Description
The exhibit entitled "Goodbye to Arms: Contraband on Borders" showcases work by some of the country's top artists who use mixed media to express their ideas.
One artist compiled handguns into the letters U-S-A.... another used pills and white powder in the shape of a machine gun to portray the relationship between narcotics and illegal arms.
Mexican officials say at least 5,000 illegal weapons are traded in Mexico per day...
And with weapon sales generating billions in revenue, efforts to clamp down on the trade have come up against stiff pressure by well-funded Washington lobbyists
Museum curator, Jacobo Dayan.
(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) MUSEUM OF MEMORY AND TOLERANCE SPOKESPERSON, JACOBO DAYAN SAYING:
"This is a multi-million dollar industry from the United States that the U.S. will not stop due to (internal) issues and lobbying of certain pressure groups. So the economic dimension represents multi-million dollar earnings in the biggest industry in the United States, and the corruption that surrounds it in the U.S.A. and in Mexico and South America."
The exhibit at the Museum of Memory and Tolerance is set to run until April of next year.
