Description

MTUC president, Syed Shahir Syed Mahamud went to the parliament house today to handover a memorandum to the Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, demanding minimum monthly wage of RM900 and RM 300 Cost of Living Allowance (Cola) for workers.

However, the Prime Minister is not in the country at the moment and the memorandum was given to Nazri Aziz, Minister in the Prime Minister Department.

Nazri promised MTUC to handover the memorandum to the Prime Minister and other cabinet ministers.

The same memorandum was also given to the Pakatan Rakyat's MPs as well.

About 100 supporters gathered outside the Parliament house in support of MTUC demands.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference today, Syed Shahir describe government's decision not to have minimum wage as 'weak'.

He said, the memorandum given today was the same one given to the Prime Minister a year ago, but to date, no positive response on the demands were received from the government.

According to MTUC, at the moment, there are 1.67 million workers in Malaysia work for a minimum rm700, lower than the poverty line for a household, which is RM900.

Also present at the press conference is Dr Wan Azizah, Parti Keadilan Rakyat's president.
