Meighan Paterson - Between

I set one alarm early,
the other one late,
the time between spent searching
for that perfect hazy solace -
balancing awareness and oblivion.

Spooned together like two puzzle pieces -
yin and yang -
beneath a cocoon of blankets, we rest.
The cat's curled in a perfect furry ball.
He snores gently by my pillow.

Sometime later, I stretch,
and realize the cat is bathing himself.
He suprises me with a whiskered kiss.
Together, we rouse the yang,
moments before the late alarm.

Alarm the second breaks the spell,
And so begins the day.
