Megaupload founder refused bail
Description
Prosecutors say he was the ringleader of a group that netted millions of dollars by copying and distributing music, movies and other copyrighted content without authorisation.
His lawyers say the company simply offered online storage.
The judge felt Dotcom, who has passports in three names, posed a significant flight risk.
Something his lawyers rejected.
(SOUNDBITE) LAWYER FOR KIM DOTCOM PAUL DAVISON, SAYING(English):
"We were hopeful that the judge would except our contentions, and our arguments and see that there was no risk what so ever of Kim Dotcom seeking to leave New Zealand. All of his assets have been frozen. All of his recourses have been taken, seized. He's living here with his wife and family. He has no intention what so ever of endeavouring to leave New Zealand."
Dotcom is to remain in custody until February 22 ahead of a hearing of an extradiction application by the United States.
