Gallinippers are native to the eastern half of the United States and are about 20 times larger than an ordinary mosquito. Their bite is reportedly unusually painful. They thrive in heavily flooded areas.
Due to its location between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, low lying areas of Seminole County are often flooded after heavy storms, providing a perfect environment for gallinippers to reproduce. However, researchers say the gallinipper isn't known to carry any harmful viruses.
It was reported that Seminole County began pre-treatment spraying in swamp areas several months ago. Residents are being advised to wear bug spray containing DEET and to cover up as best as possible in order to protect themselves from the pests.
