Description

A skull is a bony structure that forms the head in most vertebrates. It supports the structures of the face and provides a protective cavity for the brain. The human skull consists of two main parts:

1. **Cranium**: The upper part that encloses and protects the brain. It is made up of several bones, including the frontal bone, parietal bones, temporal bones, occipital bone, sphenoid bone, and ethmoid bone.

2. **Facial Skeleton**: The lower part that forms the structure of the face. This includes the mandible (lower jaw), maxilla (upper jaw), nasal bones, zygomatic bones (cheekbones), and other smaller bones.

The skull also contains various foramina (holes) and fissures (gaps) that allow nerves and blood vessels to pass through. Additionally, it has several cavities, such as the orbits (eye sockets), nasal cavity, and oral cavity. The sutures are the joints between the bones of the skull, which are immovable and fuse as a person ages.
