Matt Johnston - On a Crowded Street

On a crowded street
I came upon a man openly sobbing;
He clutched his breast
While his shoulders softly heaved.
So touched was I by this
That unbeknownst my arms were reaching,
They took his head upon my chest.
And as he sobbed I wept,
Warm tears upon his head.
And as I wept another came
Moist eyed, she asked in broken voice
“Why… what is so sad? ”
But he could not answer.
And I did not know.
