Marvin Elementary School fourth grader Cristian says science "is everywhere."
Close to 200 Marvin students put that idea on display Thursday night during the school's seventh annual science fair.
"We want to encourage students to us scientific inquiry to think outside the box," said fourth grade teacher Morgan Mazza.
In November, students were tasked with either doing some research, or experimenting on their own.
Fourth grader Reyna said she wanted to find out what color candle she'd want to use if she were in a blackout, so she experimented with different candles to see which color burns the slowest.
Fifth grader Joe's experiment put popcorn kernels at different temperatures before microwaving them -- the goal to determine if starting temperature has an effect on popping popcorn.
Cristian compared test scores after eating a sugary snack, or eating a non-sugary snack. He says sugary snacks yielded better results.
"Sugar helps the body move more, so it helps people do things faster."
"It helps them focus more," he said.
Reyna says she determined lighter-colored candles burn more slowly.
"The lighter colors reflect light (and heat). Darker colors absorb it," she said.
Mazza said it was clear to her that some of the students gathered in the school's gymnasium Thursday were "future engineers, future astronauts."
