Perhaps we shall have to ask
A tree or a passing cloud
Whether the birds are happy
In their wonderful singing.

Perhaps we shall never know
Whether our words have meaning
For those who are not yet born,
Or for the wind and flowers.

Can a poem give answers
As intimate as a kiss?
Perhaps we shall have to ask
A tree or a passing cloud.

Quattro mani

Forse dovremo chiedere
Ad un albero o ad una nuvola passeggera
Se gli uccelli sono felici
Nel loro canto meraviglioso.

Forse non sapremo mai
Se le nostre parole hanno un significato
Per coloro che non sono ancora nati,
O per il vento e i fiori.

Una poesia può dare risposte
In maniera intima, come un bacio?
Forse dovremo chiedere
Ad un albero o ad una nuvola passeggera.
