Description

When I was 19
the law already considered me a 'Man.'
...Or an 'adult' at least. Which when I was
a kid
I always assumed
'being an adult'
meant
among other things
that I wouldn't be afraid of 'stupid shit'
anymore.

But when I was 19
I went to watch the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
with a buddy of mine. After the movie
we had to walk home together.
His house was closer to the movie theater and I
ended up having to walk another mile-and-a-half
back to my apartment
by myself.

Even though I was 19
and ostensibly an 'adult'
I was terrified.
Convinced that some flesh-mask-wearing-maniac
was going to leap out of the shadows
with a deafening roar of a chainsaw
and decapitate me on the spot.
So I walked up quickly
my footsteps keeping up with my heart-rate.
I would've and should've run home
but I was too fat and lazy at
that time.
Even when I got home,
every time the shadows of the tree branches
outside my bedroom window
would shudder in the wind
my heart would beat like the engine
of a muscle car

...or a chainsaw.

Every little creak and noise
the apartment made
caused me to grab the nunchucks
I kept next to my bed
'for protection'
and get out of bed to ensure
ol' Leatherface
wasn't scaling the walls of my
house
or something
just as effing stupid.

The next night
I was fine
though.
