Description

A special performance for Wilderness Films India Ltd.!

The Pung cholom also known as the drum dance is a classical dance exclusive to the Meitei people of Manipur. The drum enjoys a special privilege in all the dances of Meitei people. This dance may be performed by men or women and is usually a preceding performance to the famous Manipuri Ras Lila.

The dancers play the pung (a form of hand beaten drum) and dance at
the same time. It is both a combination of rhythm and acrobatics. They use these acrobatic effects without breaking the rhythm or flow of music. The dance is marked by a highly refined classical dance number characterised by a gentle rhythm which builds up to a thunderous climax.
