Madeleine Garrison - Ode To The Penguin

Floating on the icy water
there sits black and white,
from the frozen perch
he cannot take flight,
but instead dives
into the deep blues
that run beneath.

As the wind blows
and the birds fly,
the penguin emperor
slides on his stomach
down the snowy slope
into the frozen water.

Chasing little fish,
he catches some
and brings them
back to the
little ones.

They gobble
them down and
give a little sigh
as the sun goes down
and is no longer high.

Cuddled together
for the darkening night,
floating on the icy water
there sits black and white.
