Lynzi Berner - The Chest

I was sweeping out
the basement
of my heart today

Trying to clean
all the dust
and spiderwebs
when I came across
an old weathered chest

It was engraved
with roses
and flames
and the lock on it
was rusted but strong

I placed my bare hand
upon the top
it seemed to vibrate
under my fingertips

I sat in silence
looking at this chest
wondering what I had tried
so hard to forget

I laid my head
against the wood
seeing in detail
the beautiful markings

I felt a cold breeze
and heard
a hauntingly familiar
whisper

Remember me

I feel back
breathless
from two words

I never opened
that chest
