Lungelo Ndzimande - Elusive Slumber

Sometimes sleep acts coy,
Leaving me stranded in the night
that douses the light
and sucks the colour out of life,
An ally of shadows
that strive on causing strife,
Contentious,
They rile,
Fishing for a fight.

But come dawn,
They scatter,
Seeking a dark corner
in which they can hide,
Silent screams
when burnt by the day's first rays of light.
