Luis Aragonés, former Spain manager dies aged 75

Former Spanish national team coach Luis Aragones has died aged 75 in Madrid.

The former footballer born in the Spanish capital took over as the country’s coach in 2004 and led Spain to their first European trophy in 2008 for the time in 44 years.

The current world champions were long regarded as under-achievers, however Aragonés introduced a new playing style known as tiki taka that has led a string of successes for the team.

Before embarking on his managerial career Aragonés had a successful career on the field. He became known as “Zapatones” or “Big boots” during his time at Atletico Madrid for his free kick prowess. His retirement from the game didn’t last long and soon he was coaching top teams. In a career spanning four decades, he was in charge of La Liga clubs Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, Mallorca, Espanyol and his former team Atletico Madrid.
