Lives - Mafalda turns 50

A window on the Latin American continent, as seen through the eyes of ordinary individuals that bring the viewer to the essence of the region.
Today we visit the beloved Latin American comic strip 'Mafalda' who turned 50 this year. Originally conceived as a a subtle type of advertisement for a product line, 'Mafalda' was first published as a proper cartoon in September of 1964. Her Argentine creator, Joaquín Salvador Lavado, better known as "Quino" continued to publish his comic strip Mafalda in several publications from 1964 to 1973, and later did books and some animated features as late as the 1990s. To Quino, Malfalda was quintessentially South American, from what she ate to what she watched, to the games she played and the house she dwelt in. To this day, the little girl who hated soup, hunger, and war, and spent her live watching, analyzing, and contradicting the nonsensical world of adults remains very popular in Latin America and many parts of Europe, and her message is as valid today as ever. teleSUR
