Description

Free from decades of dictatorship, Libyans go to the polls away from home.

Expatriates living in Jordan, many of whom fled violence and uncertainty in their own country, voted in Libya's first post-uprising elections.

A 200-member national assembly will appoint a new prime minister, make laws and help draft a constitution.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) LIBYAN NATIONAL, NOURI MANSOUR, SAYING:

"Thank god, this is our first experience and we are very happy for that. God willing the Libyans will be free and elect whoever they want to manage their affairs in the best possible way.

Voting is scheduled to begin in Libya on July 7.

But the lead-up to the election has been marred by recent violence, including attacks on organizers.
