STORY: Libya's new leaders officially declared liberation on Sunday (October 23) after four decades of Muammar Gaddafi's rule.
Thousands attended a ceremony in the eastern city of Benghazi - the birthplace of the Libyan uprising.
The head of the National Transitional Council (NTC), Mustafa Abdel Jalil, paid tribute to all those who had lost their lives during the country's eight-month conflict.
Fighters loyal to the NTC triumphed last week over Gaddafi's final bastion of resistance in his hometown of Sirte, where the former dictator was killed after being captured in events shrouded in mystery.
International human rights groups have voiced concern over what some say could have been a summary execution, but most Libyans are unconcerned with what they see as a fitting end for the "tyrant" they fought to oust from power.
