Libya marks uprising anniversary

Crowds in Tripoli marked the first anniversary of the Libyan revolution with flags, fireworks and chanting.

Thousands packed Martyrs Square in the capital to join a nationwide celebration of the uprising that ended the rule of Muammar Gaddafi.

It was a sign of some progress in dampening the public exuberance of the rival bands of militia fighters, who roam the city's streets. The honking of car horns and occasional bursts of celebratory gunfire provided the audible backdrop to the festivities.

In Benghazi, cradle of the February 17th revolution, Libya's prime minister joined revellers to light the 'Torch of Freedom' and to commemorate those who lost their lives in the fight to topple Gaddfi's autocratic rule.

For one day this was a time to party and renew hope for a better future, despite disappointment in the interim government and doubts that it can even hold together the sprawling country of six million.
