Hundreds of opposition fighters entered the city, which is just 50kms west of the capital Tripoli.
Controlling the Az-Zawiyah would cut off Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's only remaining supply routes from Tunisia.
The government, however, says it still has control of the city, and there are reports of heavy fighting there.
