Lewis C. Lopez - One Night

Outside it's hot.
It's dark and it's raining.
I'm cloaked in all black
while being chased vanely.

My breathing is hard.
My leg muscles ache.
I turn down an alley,
avoiding whats at stake.

I see a drain pipe
and climb it to the top.
Three stories up;
I should be fine i thought.

Collapsed on the roof,
I strive to take a rest.
I plan my escape
before my endurance is put to the test.

The minutes go by
yet they feel like months and years.
I climb down and run,
not concentrating on my fears.

I see some friends at the corner;
the local hangout is closing.
I ask for help from this nightmare.
My urgency to get away is showing.

We drive through town,
avoiding all stop lights.
Then head through the country
to finally escape this miserable night.
