Lauren Washington - Fireflies

Fireflies drift along
Slowly
As if to say that
They will take their time
Because they know
that you want to grab them
and seal them
up in a glass jar
with a few blades of rotting grass
five holes in the lid (too small for them to fit through)
and a stick
they die slowly
while you shove your fingers onto the glass
and
tap
tap
tap
relentlessly
until they fall down
and pretend to be dead
so that you will throw them into the trash
