Lauren, Klein end NYFW on high note

Two designers, two fashion shows, both inspired by moving pictures.

Legendary U.S. designer Ralph Lauren channeled the much-awarded British tv show "Downton Abbey" for next season.

The show began with riding jackets and trousers made of tweed.

Wool and Argyle sweaters looked like they could be lifted directly from Dame Maggie Smith's character, Violet Crawley.

The structured jackets gave way to luxurious gowns, fuscia and olive green, and black.

He gave a black leather motorcycle jacket a subtle dragon motif on the front - a nod to his growing clientele in China, where he is the best-known U.S. luxury fashion brand.

Over at Calvin Klein, designer Francisco Costa also channeled a dragon.

Lisbeth Salander, the anti-hero from the popular books and movies "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" was the inspiration for Autumn/Winter.

Models wore their hair slicked back and minimal to match the Oscar-nominated actress playing the role, Rooney Mara, who was sitting in the front row.

Intensity dominated the show, which had a backdrop of a pitch black setting and a dark, moody music.

Models walked the runway in a collection dominated by black, dark blue and gray with a few intense colors - a red-orange called "poppy" and a burnt orange called "sienna" as well as a pale green - and some touches of ivory.

"Well, most of what you saw is really developed for us. Some glazed cashmeres, there's a lot of prints that have been punched, and created this volume with a sort of camouflage feel."

Tailored wool coats and jackets without collars in midnight - a navy blue so dark that it looked black.

Silver belts gave a touch of glamour to break up the stark lines of the clothes.

New York Fashion week drew to a close on Thursday (February 16) with London next up on the fashion parade.
