Latest Google Chrome update lets users sort tabs by groups and colors

Wrangling your numerous Google Chrome tabs is about to get a little easier.

Google announced Wednesday that the next version of Chrome will let users group open tabs together with custom name tags and even colors.

The feature, which is currently live in the most recent Chrome beta build, will start rolling out next week when the latest version of Chrome launches.

Once the update hits, users will be able to create a new group or assign tabs to an existing one simply by right clicking on a tab.

Google explicitly stated the update will roll out to users "slowly," so don't get frustrated if you don't get access to the feature right away.

Once it's available to everyone, it could end the years-long scourge of people having dozens or even hundreds of disorganized tabs open for weeks at a time.

You'll be able to group tabs by type (e.g., work, videos, articles) or by urgency (e.g., check out soon, save for later).

It looks like Google is giving users plenty of flexibility to use their imaginations here.

And, yes, you can use emoji in group names, in case you were wondering.

What's even more useful about this update is the ability to move entire tab groups around.

So if you want to relegate a group to the far right side of the screen, you have the freedom to do so.

Giving people the ability to organize their tabs might not ensure that they'll actually, you know, read any of those articles they've had open for months.
