Last Officer in Floyd Case Sentenced

Tou Thao, the last of the former Minneapolis police officers to be sentenced in connection with George Floyd's death, received a sentence of 4 years and 9 months without expressing remorse or admitting wrongdoing. Thao previously said he acted as a "human traffic cone" holding back bystanders during the incident where former Officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck. This event sparked global protests and a heightened focus on police brutality and racism. During the sentencing, Thao made biblical references, comparing himself to figures like Job and Jesus, and denied responsibility for Floyd's death. Judge Peter Cahill, who found Thao guilty of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter in May, was hoping for a sign of remorse. The judge gave Thao a 57-month sentence, more than the prosecution and defense had sought.
