Larry Smith - Blossomings

As I gaze into the faces
of our new granddaughters
bright eyes and gentle smiles
beckoning my heart to trust,
I wonder just how long
I’ll be responsible to them.
As long as I am able.

Like their brothers and sisters
they have changed their parents’ lives
forever. Their tiny fingers
now reach out like roots
into the loose turf of my life
holding me together, giving me
safe ground to dream for them:
cousins like sisters,
one day walking together
to the beach, blowing out candles
on each other’s cakes,
spinning around in fine dresses,
their lovely faces saying Yes,
me too in your life.
