you turned your back on us
just learning how to walk
one's who had no voice
you walked away.

we never spoke of you
like you didn't exist
it was an unspoken rule
'don't rock the boat'.

you never rocked me
or held me, or read to me
no lullabies
no verse.

how does it feel?
can you comprehend?
you tried so broken down
to mend, but
it was too late
i had already fallen
to pieces.

cowering behind the music
handwritten cards
'Love Dad'.

now i lay me down to sleep
i cradle myself, still stinging
from your exit wound.
