This show proves that the King of Betajnova, one of the key plays of the contemporary Slovene drama, is relevant for the present moment again. Brutal accumulation of capital is guided by the same principles in Cankar’s time and today. Common interests of politics, capital, church and judiciary work together to crush any attempt at individual rebellion. Director Eduard Miler has scrupulously cut the text (leaving out less important characters) and added Brechtian songs. Stage space is black and white, reduced; it is the church and the pub at the same time. Acting style is distinctive and compelling.
