Kloss gibbon project

We are looking for partners (company, foundation, zoo, ect) in our kloss gibbon conservation project.

These gibbons, endemique of the Mentawai’s island, are endangered. Kalaweit 3 more kloss gibbons last November, and Kalaweit is starting the first breeding program of the species. The objectives are to anticipate the extinction trade on the species. The breeding program, on a long term, will help to reinforce wild population on the 4 island where the kloss gibbon is found. This program will be follow with awareness campaign in Mentawai and effective collaboration with the local authorities.

This breeding program is taking place in Sumatra (Supayang, 1.30 hour from Padang), for easy access to all medic and analyze services from the province capital Padang

Kalaweit, in collaboration with the Indonesian ministry of forestry and the Siberut National Park, is starting the only conservation program (including breeding program) in the world. The team from the Siberut National Park told us that they will confiscate more kloss gibbons soon.

Kalaweit is already looking for support for these project in Borneo and Sumatra (almost 250 gibbons and siamangs), and hopes to find partners soon to help in his initiative to save the kloss gibbons. This beginning of the year is financially difficult for Kalaweit.

Kalaweit owns a land in Sumatra (8 hectars), and we want to start building the project as soon as possible all the infrastructures needed for the “Kloss gibbon project”. This land is safe from tsunami.

The budget of the first step is 50.000 euros, to build : 1 quarantine complex (4 cages), 5 larges enclosures for pairs, one clinic, also to do all the tests, pay the vets, etc.
