After North Korea fired multiple projectiles on Saturday morning,... Pyongyang's state media has reported that Kim Jong-un was present to oversee the launch of what some experts say were short-range missiles.
Lee Min-sun has the details. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw the "strike drill" conducted on Saturday morning.
North Korean state media reported Sunday that Kim gave the order of firing to "increase the combat ability" of the country.
The Korean Central News Agency said the purpose of the drill was to test the performance of large-caliber long-range multiple rocket launchers and tactical guided weapons by defense units.
It said Kim stressed the need to "defend the political sovereignty and economic self-sustenance" of the country in the face of threat and invasion,...that he praised the successful execution of the training that took place without notice and expressed satisfaction over the troop 's quick response capability.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that North Korea "fired a number of short-range missiles from its Hodo peninsula,... but in a later statement changed the definition from "missile" to "projectile."
However, some experts believe the North deployed short-range missiles,... based on analysis of images released by the KCNA.
The JCS has yet to clarify exactly how many projectiles were fired but said they are working closely with the U.S and maintain a strong joint military readiness posture.
