Kay Francis - Imaginary Rainbow

I placed an imaginary rainbow
in the sky for you today.
I hope you pretended to see it
from your airplane window.
It should have looked
like a lovely colored smile
beaming up at you in your mind
from the earth below.
Tuck that celestial-grin
inside your pretend-pocket
for the heat of reality will soon
slap you in the face.

When you descent and disembark,
you'll feel the sun's after burn,
a trail of fire left behind at twilight,
capable of scorching magnolia
and parching wetlands
at the mouth of Mobile Bay.

The gental Asian breezes
from half an orbit away
will be memories
as returning to routine
places sweltering demands
on your time and energy.
Grass still grows
when you're not at home.

Since I couldn't be there
to welcome you in person,
I sent you a telepathic rainbow
to remind you, like grass,
my love for you has also
continued to grow,
and degree by degree,
the temperature inside me
is rising.
