Description

New Orleans in Louisiana has a population of around 300,000. Of those, it is estimated that 12,000 are homeless - twice the number of pre-Hurricane Katrina. And it is believed another 5,000 are living in abandoned properties across the city.

Many people in the city lived in low-income public housing until it was hit hard by the storm.

But instead of rebuilding their homes, the New Orleans council voted to demolish many of them in favour of mixed-income housing, accommodating less people at higher rents.

Al Jazeera's Cath Turner reports from New Orleans.
