Description

An audio slideshow from the Montreal Gazette with narration from photographer John Kenney with his photos from the first morning of what came to be known as the Oka Crisis. The Quebec Provincial Police, the Sûreté du Québec came into the Mohawk community of Kanesatake to dismantle a peaceful barricade that had been erected to stop the expansion of a golf course by the town of Oka on land that the Mohawks considered to be their land. The police were met with resistance and a tense 78-day-stand-off ensued.
