when does a relationship become more than just an exchange?

an exchange of time, of gifts, of motions
and of ancient rituals of sniffing each others butts, grunting, and mating?

i need someone to tell me
when is it more than a soap opera “affair”
a cheap scene of characters who couldn’t scrub themselves clean
who don’t know simple things like “wash behind your ears”

when does the heart decide
to kick in
to leave the small mirrors,
walking through dark corridors
to finally enter the scene
and start playing Shakespeare
where we all become the stuff of legends

in enter tragedy and comedy
and we are set free in a grand scheme
giants resting on mountains of love
