Just Cause – Civil Death

"Just Cause," hosted by Colombian human rights advocate Piedad Córdoba, offers a series of documentaries on Latin American economic, political and social realities. Today’s program exposes the plight of hundreds of thousands of Haitians living in the Dominican Republic. Many work in the sugar cane fields, where they receive an average of 3 dollars per ton of cane cut. Formerly, the Constitution said anyone born in Dominican territory was a Dominican citizen, but since 2004, legislation refutes the citizenship of children of “illegal” immigrants, who are the victims of a kind of civil death. teleSUR
