Julie Neises - Regret

Stepped on
and kicked to the curb.
I try to explain
with one single verb.

I sit and I wonder,
and try as I might.
It's another uphill battle
and I'm losing the fight.

I drink and smoke
trying to clear my mind.
Everything gets cloudy
and harder to find.

I decide to go on
with a slit on my wrist.
My knuckles turn white
and so tightens my fist.

I want to call out,
get rid of my past.
But my mind keeps repeating
'remain steadfast'.

I pace 'round the room
my stomach in knots.
Getting impatient
I do another shot.

I finally have it,
so before I forget.
I write down one word,
and that word is regret.
