Juge Sopczak - Roots

Born of ghost and shadow
she is secret.
Her roots do not ground her
but she carries them
hidden in the folds of a mystery
only she understands.
They intertwine with mythologies
she creates
and grow into wounds filled with blood.
Some days the blood feels so thick it hurts
so she bears down to release it
thankful to rid herself of the weight.
She speaks the language of silence
to dead and unknown ancestors.
Sometimes her roots grow too wild
with goddesses that trip her like cats-
she trims them with a gentle shhhhh.
Other times she gathers them close
and whispers the story of how they came to be.
Having told the story so many times,
she can almost believe it herself.
She becomes invisible in mirrors,
instead looks into familiar faces,
each one bearing its own bad seed.
Each night she lights candles and pretends
they are answers to questions gone unanswered....
