Joyce Hemsley - Victory Day
1 Views • Jun 11, 2014
Description
we gave our hearts
closed our eyelids to pray
in a humble and peaceful way
many years ago, on the eighth of May
neath friendly victorious skies
and banners high, we trod
we gave our hearts
to God.
Comrades gathered in each City Square
as songs of elation floated on air...
the second world war of wars had ended
and heavenly peace, to earth descended.
Raids from the Luftwaffe low in flight
still tortured our minds in dreams at night
Wars should never ever be
but wars will ever ever be!
'Fight the good fight with all thy might'
Is this wrong, or is this right?
Should we be looking back in shame
or should we be singing a battle refrain?
'Twas an old-fashioned world of despair,
when spitfires and hurricanes took to the air,
our lesson we should have learnt well,
but did we? The future years will tell.
To God
we gave our hearts
closed our eyelids to pray
in a humble and peaceful way
many years ago, on the eighth of May
neath friendly victorious skies
and banners high we trod
we gave our hearts
to God.
