WHAT GRAND design has brought us to this place
In time and space? The hour has come for naught,
And, here, all effort ends in such disgrace;
So close were we, yet missed the prize we sought.

As time pressed on, the struggle of each day
Held promise that that day would be the last—
But, in due time, our hearts had lost their way;
Oh, how the days turned into years that passed.

And, now, what have we left on which to build
A way across this chasm, deep and wide?
With every hope and dream left unfulfilled,
The answer to it all remains inside.
