Lá mora Mary Kelly (Heather Graham) e seu grupo de amigas, que vivem sendo hostilizadas pelas gangues locais e são obrigadas a se prostituir para sobreviver. Até que uma das companheiras de Mary, Annie (Katrin Cartlidge), é repentinamente sequestrada, com este acontecimento logo seguido pelo brutal assassinato de Polly (Annabelle Apsion). Desconfiando que tais acontecimentos sejam na verdade uma "caçada" às garotas de Whitechapel, o caso logo chama a atenção de Frederick Abberline (Johnny Depp), um brilhante e perturbado inspetor de polícia que muitas vezes usa de seus poderes psíquicos para solucionar casos. Abberline se envolve cada vez mais com o caso e aos poucos se apaixona perdidamente por Mary, mas quanto mais se aproxima da verdade mais Whitechapel fica perigosa para Abberline, Mary e suas companheiras.
