John Sarvay - Holding

This must be how the runner felt:
If I can just hold it together,
tomorrow I’ll be in Thebes.

It is a flat evening sky, lacking
in illumination but still bright.
Sliding behind the rail and assorted
wires, terra cotta tiles, trees and spires,

a long, low bank of clouds slowly glides
eastward. If I can just hold it together,

this storm will pass.
