Joanna Jiang - School Cafeteria

In this chaotic haven,
I push my broccoli around and around in my plate
I feel a source of excitement, delirious excitement, pumping through me
I stab the broccoli through the middle
The members of this division all stare with the same blank expression of relaxation
I lick the sweet mix of salad dressing off the broccoli
Through their eyes, you see their state of peace and calm
I take a bite.
But through their actions, you see a rampage of wild animals
I finish the broccoli and wipe my hands.
This is what I always encounter.
This is what I observe.
As a grand finale to my performance
I stand and deliver my plate to the cleaning lady.
