Javaid Anwar - My Snowman

“It was a long jump, children!
No, a forceful push behind made me stumble down
An unintentional jump—yes, a jump!
It took me hours to cross
The empty void of all spheres
Till I reached this lowly ground…”

The white bearded man
As old as the charcoal eyed snowman of my childhood—
Narrated the whole story
The hundredth time this winter

My snowman is my creation
I widen, lengthen and blacken
His bust, nose and eyes
As wide, long and black as I wish

“Who bleaches this too white?
It hurts my eyes! ”

I emptied my whole cold kangri on him
And made him ashen
O! What? Where is his left eye, long nose and broad chest?
It’s now but an ugly fragile lingam
Unfit to be worshiped
I’ll push it and make it stumble down
To the lowly ground…
