Description

Waves batter the coastline of Japan's Okinawa Island as Typhoon Bolaven makes landfall Sunday.

It brought winds of up to 213 kilometres an hour - that's 132 miles.

The typhoon whipped palm trees and poured torrential rains on any resident caught outside.

The treacherous weather prompted officials to close bus routes and flights in and out of Okinawa.

Part of the island's road network was also closed.

Online weather sites are calling Bolaven a category four typhoon.
