A C-130 Hercules transport plane like this one was due to fly from Japan on Wednesday to help in the search for the missing Malaysian Airlines plane.

Japan's defence ministry said three more aircraft, some of them P3C surveillance planes like this, will join the hunt soon.

Members of the Japanese Self Defence Force flew out ahead on Tuesday to assess what more could be done to help the investigation in to the disappearance of flight MH370.

The Boeing 777-200 series plane with 239 passengers and crew on board vanished on Saturday.

By Wednesday, five days after its last contact with air traffic controllers, there was still no sign of the plane or any clue to what happened to it.
