Description

In time the Golden City gate no longer opened free
The dirt and grime coangulate, too hard then turn the key.
For no-one now to oil the lock, to scrape corroding rust
All gone now, gone for ever more, all gone beneath the dust.

For man in search of wanton wealth, by raping nature's wares
Destroyed that precious giving soil on which survival fared.
Till no-one left there now to care, or even take the blame
And long dead plants that grew there once, lie fossilised in shame

Where once wild creatures freely roamed, where songbirds' voices soared
Where once so greened with trees and plants, now only waste is stored.
Where once so sweet this blessed land, so full of living joy.....
Now still and black and dead it lies, this place that greed destroyed.

No platforms left to set the drill, to gouge that savaged land
No space, no room to sink the wells, no sheen of golden sand.
No cars to build, no roads to drive, no factories belching dross,
No people left to even care, or ever mourn its loss.

Then, man, infinite in his thirst, fled from his cruel deed
To seek again a virgin soil in which to plant his seed.
Found far across that barren void, cross universal girth
A green and blue and pleasant place, again he called it Earth.
