JAE JAE - The unknowable

I don't know...
How to list the many
Multitudes
Of those unkind, precious
things-
that I don't know;

and

I don't know
How not to merely
echo
Those kind
compliments that
Fall so easily through
your breath-
(They bounce back
Off my ears,
But maybe one in five
Will reach my heart) :

and

I don't know
How it must feel
To know everything you've
known before
Is true,
Still and always,
Right and whole;
To understand.

But
I know these:

How not to say too much,
Even without a filter; and
How not to say I love you,
Even with the syllables pulsing
in my throat; and
How to back away

From love.

I don't know how you do it:
Stand in the fire, invincible-
Like you've always known...

I don't know.
