The Joker is a fictional character portrayed by Heath Ledger and the main antagonist of The Dark Knight, the second film in The Dark Knight trilogy, where he is described as a maniacal criminal mastermind who rises to dominant power by terrorizing Gotham City and plunging it into anarchy. He is director Christopher Nolan and screenwriter David S. Goyer's interpretation of the comic book character created by Jerry Robinson, Bill Finger and Bob Kane in 1940 as the archenemy of the superhero Batman. This is the third time the character has been portrayed in a live-action film.
