Israeli jets attack Syrian target

The Syrian army says Israeli jets have attacked a military base in the west of the country. Some media and a monitoring group claim the site was being used to produce chemical weapons.

An official Syrian statement said missiles fired from Lebanese airspace hit the site near Masyaf in the northwest of the country, killing two soldiers. So far Israel has made no comment on the matter but it has been known to have carried out air strikes in the past.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claims the rockets hit a nearby Scientific Studies and Research Centre (SSRC) that was used to store ground-to-ground rockets.

The incident came a day after UN investigators concluded that the Syrian Air Force had dropped a chemical weapon containing Sarin gas on a rebel-held town in April, killing at least 83 people. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has always maintained that incident in Khan Sheikhoun was a fabrication.
