Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening, was declared dead a few minutes ago. She was 68.
She passed away at Chennai's Apollo Hospital, where she was being treated by a team of eminent cardiologists. She had been suffering a lung infection since quite some time and a team of doctors from AIIMS had also flown down to Chennai to help in her treatment.
Owing to Amma’s immense popularity, the Centre is keeping an eye on the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu as thousands of fans of the Iron Lady have gathered outside the hospital.
Referred to as the Queen of Tamil Cinema, the yesteryear actress had appeared in more than 140 Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films. Previously she had served as a Chief Minister from 1991 to 1996, in 2001, from 2002 to 2006 and from 2011 to 2014. She was re-elected as Chief Minister on 19 May 2016.
